I picked up knitting at the beginning of 2024 out of sheer curiosity. You must wonder, "Oh well, we can be curious about anything and everything, but why in knitting?"

I must say our sub-conscious mind works wonders when it comes to registering and later on, regurgitating the slightest and most unassuming things, places, actions, people and in my case, a paragraph I read from an autobiography of Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States of America. I can't recall which of her autobiographies I was reading, but I think it's her second book entitled, "The Light We Carry". In one of the chapters documenting Mrs Obama's life during the COVID-19 lockdown in the States, she wrote about picking up knitting as a hobby and how knitting has been such a therapeutic endeavour. The repetitive actions and the need to pay attention to stitch counts enabled her to focus on the present, working on the stitches to get the product out.

On one of Amazon's Black Friday sales in 2024, I don't know what got into me but I decided to browse the art and craft section and before I knew it, small knitting project packs started to dominate my phone screen. It was enticing for me to get one of those small knitting project packs. I mean, each project pack was labelled "For ABSOLUTE beginners" and described as close to being "idiot-proof"! Also, each project pack comes with all the necessary tools and materials with instructions (either in video format or in a little leaflet) for someone to complete a simple project such as a small dishcloth or a coaster. It was a no-brainer for me to pick up one of the project packs (which was to knit and produce a small dishcloth, 10 cm by 10 cm!).

I somehow transitioned into crocheting, which I found much more therapeutic and efficient for me to produce various products. While others focus on crocheting amigurumi, I find joy in crocheting products with utility value such as scarves, mug holders, scrunchies, shawls, gloves, bags, and pencil cases. I try to document my crocheting journey via my Instagram account, Crafteroo.

The Mental Health Benefits of Crocheting

Like I have mentioned earlier, crocheting is more than just a craft; it is a therapeutic activity that has been shown to provide significant mental health benefits. Engaging in crocheting can serve as an effective means to reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of depression. The repetitive nature of crocheting allows individuals to enter a state of mindfulness, where focus shifts from worries about daily life to the simple pleasure of creating something tangible. This meditative quality of crocheting can help calm racing thoughts and promote relaxation.

Research indicates that repetitive tasks, such as those found in crocheting, can lead to a measurable decrease in cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. According to a study published in the Journal of Occupational Science, participants who engaged in crafting activities experienced a marked improvement in their mood and a reduction in anxiety levels. Experts suggest that the rhythm and consistency of crocheting can produce a sense of order in one’s life, counteracting feelings of chaos and uncertainty.

Furthermore, crocheting fosters a sense of accomplishment as individuals create projects, ranging from simple dishcloths to intricate garments. Each finished piece serves as a visual representation of the time and effort invested, contributing to a heightened sense of self-worth and confidence. Mastering new stitches or patterns also enables the development of new skills, enhancing cognitive function and concentration. This engagement in an artistic endeavor stimulates the brain, often translating into improved problem-solving abilities and creative thinking.

Overall, the mental health benefits of crocheting make it an accessible and enjoyable activity for many individuals. By promoting mindfulness and providing an avenue for self-expression, crocheting not only alleviates stress but also nurtures emotional resilience. Such attributes are essential for maintaining a balanced mental state, making crocheting a valuable addition to one’s lifestyle.

Crocheting Around the World

Crocheting is a craft that transcends geographical boundaries, embedding itself deeply within various cultures across the globe. Its artistic expressions and community-building characteristics have prompted a renaissance of crocheting, particularly in Southeast Asia, with Singapore emerging as a notable hub. Here, crocheting is not merely a pastime; it is an integral part of the social fabric, promoting mental well-being through shared creative experiences.

In Singapore, initiatives aimed at fostering a sense of community through crocheting have become increasingly prevalent. Workshops and exhibitions have been organized, allowing enthusiasts to come together and share techniques, experiences, and creative ideas. These events not only educate participants about the intricacies of crocheting but also provide a supportive environment that encourages emotional well-being. For many, these gatherings serve as a therapeutic outlet, proving instrumental in reducing stress and promoting mindfulness.

Across different regions, the cultural significance of crocheting varies. In Latin America, for instance, crocheting often reflects vibrant traditions and stories, with each piece representing a profound connection to ancestry and heritage. Conversely, in parts of Europe, crocheting is frequently intertwined with social activism, where communities focus on creating textile art that raises awareness for mental health issues. These varied approaches highlight the diverse ways in which crocheting is employed as a tool for fostering social connections and enhancing mental health.

Moreover, the rise of online crocheting communities has broken down geographical barriers, enabling individuals to share their projects and experiences globally. This digital platform has opened avenues for collaboration and support among crocheters from different cultural backgrounds, further enriching the crocheting landscape. Ultimately, the global perspective on crocheting serves to underscore its power as a unifying craft that transcends differences and promotes holistic well-being.

Getting Started with Crocheting: A Beginner’s Guide

Crocheting is an engaging and rewarding craft that can promote mental well-being. For those interested in exploring this delightful hobby, getting started requires only a few essential materials and resources. First, the primary tools needed are yarn and crochet hooks. When selecting yarn, beginners should choose medium-weight yarn, as it is easier to work with. There are diverse fibers available, such as acrylic, cotton, and wool; each offers unique textures and uses. For hooks, a size H-8 (5mm) or I-9 (5.5mm) is ideal for those just beginning, as they provide a good balance between ease of maneuverability and yarn tension.

Patterns and tutorials are beneficial for novices, as they guide through the various stitches and techniques. Many online platforms such as YouTube and crocheting blogs provide free video tutorials that cater specifically to beginners. Recommended starter projects include simple items such as dishcloths, scarves, or coasters, which allow new crocheters to practice fundamental stitches like chain stitch, single crochet, and double crochet.

For individuals located in Singapore or other regions, seeking community resources can enhance the learning experience. Local yarn stores often offer classes or workshops designed for beginners, providing hands-on guidance from experienced instructors. Additionally, community centers or crafting clubs may host meet-ups where novices can learn alongside peers. Crocheting websites are invaluable, featuring patterns, forums, and a network of crocheters eager to share tips and support. By taking the first steps in crocheting, beginners can gradually build their skills while enjoying the mental health benefits associated with this serene and creative pursuit.

As for me, I'm going to take on a massive challenge by attempting to crochet my very own crochet blanket! Well, never say NEVER!
